Enchanting for the incredible scent it releases during flowering, freesia is characterized by cheerful colors and the elegance of its bearing, which make it perfect as an ornamental plant, both in gardens and for growing in pots! It contains 20 bulbs.
Description:
Freesia is a perennial bulbous belonging to the Iridaceae family and native to South Africa. It is a small herbaceous plant: it usually does not exceed 30 centimeters in height. Its flowers are gathered in clusters of 6-12 fragrant bluebells, whose color ranges from white to cream, to arrive at variations of yellow, orange, red, and purple.
Care:
The bulbs are planted between August and September at about 2-4 cm deep and spacing the rows by about 15 cm from each other. Small leaflets will begin to sprout in late summer and vegetative development will continue until November. In this phase, it is necessary to support the plant with a rather frequent liquid fertilization. The young seedlings will give their first blooms as early as the following spring. Before the night temperatures start to rise above 10 °, it will be best to dig up the bulbs and store them in a cool place. It is necessary to choose a bright and sunny place for many hours of the day; freesia only fears the cold and thermal variations. In addition, it is a plant that loves soft, rich and well-drained soils: the ideal substrate for its cultivation is a mix of universal soil, peat and sand. The water supply must be constant until the end of flowering. When the leaves begin to turn yellow, watering must be suspended. It is important to moderate the amount of water to avoid soaking the soil. For cultivation in open ground, rainwater may be sufficient. To help the plant it is advisable to remove withered flowers and dry leaves. During flowering, the flowers must be harvested when they are not yet fully open. After flowering, when the leaves are dry, the corms must be unearthed, cleaned, left in a sheltered and well-ventilated place to dry them and stored in paper bags with a little sawdust.
