Eliscriso Italicum is a plant perennial shrub, in Italy it is widespread especially in the central-southern regions and in the islands. In spring the helichrysum is filled with delicious fragrant yellow flowers grouped in corymbs. Both the leaves and the flowers they give off an aromatic scent reminiscent of those of licorice and curry. This is why it is called in English curry plant, even if its leaves are not part of the preparation of this spice mix. Helichrysum is also known by the name of Houseleek because it retains the flowers and perfume for a very long time.

CARE

Eelichrysum italicum can be grown both in the ground and in pots, preferably of terracotta to have better soil drainage. This shrub grows well in poor and sandy soils while it does not like calcareous soils at all.

He does not have many needs, choose for him a place in the sun, well-drained soil and water in the spring to regain vegetation. It resists summer drought well thanks to the down that covers its leaves but cannot stand the intense cold and excessive humidity, so in case of harsh winters protect the plant with breathable sheets. There is no need to prune it but only periodic cleaning to maintain its shape and remove dry branches.

USES

Fresh licorice helichrysum leaves have a delicious aroma that can be felt more by rubbing them between your fingers. In the kitchen they are preferably used dried leaves as they are fresh they have a bitter aftertaste. In spring, collect the flowering twigs and let them dry. Then store them in glass jars and use them to flavor rice, vegetables, eggs and meat, especially chicken.

Licorice Helichrysum is a widely used plant in phytotherapy for its many properties. Thanks to its qualities antiallergic, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and expectorants promotes the elimination of bronchial catarrh and reduces inflammation of the nasal mucosa, if of allergic origin.
