Sarracenia is a carnivorous plant that is easy to grow in pots, in the open ground in the garden and especially along the edges of an artificial pond.
Sarracenia is one herbaceous carnivorous plant of the family of Sarraceniaceae, originally from South America. I am leaves with their cone or inverted tube shape, open at the tip, the peculiarity of this plant. It is a plant perennial equipped with a rhizomatous root which gives rise to characteristic bright green leaves with evident brick-red ribs that transform into particular organs with specific functions. The leaves of the Sarracenia, arranged in basal rosettes, form tubular organs, called ascidia. In winter when the plant enters vegetative rest, the leaves dry up and then sprout again in the following spring.
CARE
Choose for this plant bright and sunny places, sheltered from trees or shrubs especially in summer. Not afraid of the cold and very low temperatures. Love soft ground, humid and slightly acidic, the optimal substrate for cultivation of sarracenia is a mixture of 2 parts of peat and one of sand. Water it regularly with rain or distilled water, taking care to always leave a little water in the saucer in the hottest periods. Hard, calcareous water alters the pH of the substrate, the plant suffers, suffocates and dies. In winter it is sufficient to keep the soil barely moist. Mist often because it loves humidity in the air. Do not fertilize sarracenia because it is able by itself, through the digestion of insects, to supply itself with the essential nutrients for its growth and survival. Manually eliminate dried ascidia to prevent the formation of dangerous molds.
